Summer Trip 2010: Athens, Greece

The first major destination of our summer trip was Athens, Greece. Athens is one of the world's oldest cities with a fascinating history. The ancient monuments, sculptures, and the works of art from the classic Greek culture are still evident around the city. The most famous monuments are found on the Acropolis, the city center of ancient Athens, and the highest hill above the modern city.

We walked through the temple of Athena Nike to find an incredible view of the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to goddess Athena.

Across from it was the beautiful Erechtheion with its famous porch of the Caryatids.

From the top of the Acropolis, we could see an amazing view of Athens.

The New Acropolis Museum hosts numerous unique finds and architectural sculptures from the Acropolis. It is a must visit.

On the slopes of the Acropolis, we found the Theater of Dionysus, one of the earliest theaters in the world.

We also explored the Agora, another important part of the ancient city of Athena, a place for assemblies and a market place. The Temple of Hephaestus is the best preserved temple in the Agora.

From the Temple of Hephaestus was a great view of the Agora and the Acropolis.

We stayed in the Ledra Marriott near the business center of Athens. It was a comfortable hotel with a fabulous breakfast buffet. We also got a mezze platter there one night in their rooftop restaurant.

We enjoyed the spanakopita, conveniently shaped in little rolls and very tasty.

The grilled octopus was really tender and delicious and we also liked the sausages. On the other hand, the fried squid was a little disappointing with the batter being quite soggy.

We also had the taramosalata, hummus, tzatziki, and melitzanosalata (Greek eggplant salad) served with pita.

The mezes were pretty nice overall but the best feature of this restaurant is definitely the stunning view of the Acropolis.

Next week, I will continue my Summer Trip 2010 series with the description of some of the terrific meals we had in Athens and the trips we took to see other parts of Greece.
